Baby Steps

I sit here on the hardwood floor, watching my friend Andrew sleep, listening to the beautiful African music he gave me today. It’s the type of collection I will be listening to on repeat for countless days to come. So emotional, so raw… Even though I have no grasp of their words, it moves me in a very intense way…

He is so inspiring. This morning we talked about the Geometry of Sound, world music, music’s cultural roots, the mysticism of sound and music, (An amazing book by Hazrat Inayat Kahn), and much more. I wanted to share one little thing from our talks. He spoke of his growth in piano. He took a very simplistic, exploratory approach in reaching the amazing aptitude he has attained now. He told me he started from just playing one note, discovering all that note had to offer, and with what tempo, energy and intent it could be played. Then when he felt he had a good feel for the range of possibilities which lie within the one note, he added another and a whole new world opened up again. He followed this same process, thoroughly exploring each step as he counted up slowly. In doing this he created a vast array of improvisational patterns which, with time, only became more varied and complex. Now his musical awareness and flexibility in regards to the map of the keys and what they can do in any moment is truly something to behold. And this makes sense to me in a very organic way. If you are truly passionate about something, you savor every little detail of your journey to mastery. You give yourself the foundation to be set free from conventional limits and create straight from the dreamscape of your heart. This is a universal truth that I believe applies to learning anything. When I was first learning to juggle two years ago, my friend Arsene, (who has taught for cirque du soleil and is an altogether astounding performer), said nearly the same thing. He said If you want to become an amazing juggler, first play with only one ball. Learn to through it low, throw it high, throw it while moving, throw it behind your back, etc… etc.. Then when you have explored what your full range of motion offers you with one ball, then add another, and then another and so on. Also, when I discovered hat manipulation I started with total beginners mind and it was very much this way for me. I tried to just play with the object in a very raw and exploratory way for as long as I could before integrating outside influence. Perhaps that is why it feels a modicum closer to me than other things I learned in more traditional ways. I feel like it came right out of me; a natural progression.

By taking baby steps at first you allow your wings to grow in… I love when the synchronistic truths of multiple things in my bubble become aligned.
